Alcohol Abuse
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), 39% of the Arkansas population (aged 12 or older) reported the use of alcohol in the past month. Around 17% of the people in the age group of 12–17 years and around 54% in the age group of 18–25 years reported using alcohol past month. Among the people of 26 years or older the rate is more than 39%.

In the survey, approximately 22% of the Arkansas people showed binge alcohol use and more than 43% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12–17, the past month binge alcohol use is more than 11 %. In the state, 7.57% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.

Drug Abuse
Cocaine Powder and crack cocaine, which are readily available throughout Arkansas, pose significant problems to the state because of their relation to street gang violence. Though Mexican black tar and brown powdered heroin are available, they are less popular. Mexican and domestic marijuana are also widely available throughout the state.
Methamphetamine is another major drug of concern and creating the
need for substance
abuse treatment in Arkansas. Locally produced methamphetamine
and a variety imported from Mexico are available all through the state.
Club drugs are commonly used at raves and college hangouts. MDMA is
the most popular one and LSD, GHB, and OxyContin are increasing in
demand. Among diverted pharmaceuticals, the hydrocodone products like
codeine, oxycodone, and benzodiazepines are the most popular.
According to the National Household Survey on Drug
Abuse (2001), around 1.45% of Arkansas citizens have dependence
on illicit drugs. A survey among high school students in 2001 revealed
that 43.6% had used marijuana at least once in their lifetime and
22.6% were its current users.
