Alaska Drug and Alcohol Intervention Programs and Treatment Data on Drug Alcohol Rehab Treatment

Drug Abuse, Alcohol Abuse, Addiction Treatment and Rehab Programs

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2003), 51% of the Alaska population (aged 12 or older) reported the use of alcohol in the past month. Around 16% of the people in the age group of 12-17 years and 60% in the age group of 18-25 years reported using alcohol past month. Among the people of 26 years or older, the rate is around 56%.

In the survey, more than 23% of Alaskans showed binge alcohol use and around 41% reported perceptions of great risk of having five or more drinks of an alcoholic beverage once or twice a week. In the age group of 12-17, past month binge alcohol use is above 11 %. In the state, 8.63% of the total population showed alcohol dependence or abuse in past year.

Drug Addiction, Abuse and Treatment

Alaska is one of the top five purchasing states for fentanyl, d-amphetamine, oxycodone, methadone and meperidine, which are five of the top twelve diverted drugs. Cocaine and Marijuana are readily available in most areas of the state. Cocaine is commonly seen in powder and crack forms in the major urban areas and is primarily ingested by snorting or smoking. The Alaskan-grown marijuana with high THC content has high demand in the market. Alaska state law allows the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

Methamphetamine is another growing threat. Its availability, both from local labs and from outside sources, is fast increasing. Of the club drugs, MDMA is an increasing menace throughout the state. Benzodiazepine is also widely abused in Alaska.

According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (2000-2001), around 1.43% of Alaska citizens have dependence on illicit drugs and most of the addicts fall in the age group of 12-25. In a survey conducted among Alaska high school students during 2003, 47.5% reported using marijuana at least once during their lives and around 13.1% reported using it before age 13.
